This February marks the fourth annual Black Restaurant Challenge in Boston — an initiative initially started to encourage more people to dine at and support Black restaurants. With the pandemic, the focus has turned to takeout and delivery, but the mission is more important than ever. Nia Grace, owner of Darryl s Corner Bar and Kitchen, and Douglass Williams, chef-owner of MIDA, joined Jim Braude to talk about the effort as well as their fundraiser for the Greater Boston Food Bank.

This month marks the fourth annual Boston Black Restaurant Challenge, which sets diners the enjoyable goal of patronizing one Black-owned restaurant each week. The community and its independent restaurants need support now more than ever, in February and beyond. More than 20 percent of Massachusetts restaurants that closed at the beginning of the pandemic have not reopened. And Black-owned restaurants didn’t enter the COVID era on equal footing, facing factors such as disinvestment in communities, lack of access to capital, a wealth gap that means smaller savings, and challenges accessing PPP funds. Restaurants are in a fight for their lives due to the pandemic, but takeout doesn’t just support these small businesses that are such an integral part of our cities and neighborhoods. Lafayette GEAR UP is working with the UL College of Education to connect LPSS high school teachers with best-practices training for navigating online and remote learning.
Led by Nathan Roberts, dean of the College of Education, this semester-long pilot program will enable teachers to use technology and virtual resources to create high-quality, online-learning environments and experiences for their students.
While many LPSS teachers have already devoted time to improving their online and virtual-learning knowledge, this program will further develop their expertise by providing advanced training and mentoring. ....
