Douglas Point Decommissioning Continues

Last Updated: May 21, 2021 | 5:48 PM Supplied Photo The tear-down of the Douglas Point nuclear facility near Bruce Power is continuing and there are plans for the rest of 2021 and 2022. Several people including Decommissioning Manager Joe Holstead were on hand at a recent Kincardine Committee of the Whole meeting to update councillors. Holstead says they are cleaning out all the asbestos in all the non-nuclear buildings on site. Holstead says they have about 30,000 pounds of low-level waste from the purification building. He says most of that will be recycled. Whatever’s left will not go to the nearby Western Waste Management Facility but will be trucked to Chalk River for processing.

Process to remove Douglas Point reactor about to begin

Kincardine, ON, Canada / ShorelineToday.ca Apr 13, 2021 6:17 AM Work will soon get underway to remove the building and storage facilities at the former Douglas Point nuclear generating facility. The Canadian Nuclear Laboratories recently received approval of their amended licence from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Project Director Ian Bainbridge says they were basically maintaining the facility since it last operated in 1984 but can now lay the groundwork on the removal of the building.     Bainbridge says work which will include asbesto removal and isolation of services is not expected to begin until 2022. The CNL are overseeing the decommissioning of the 12-acre site located inside the now Bruce Nuclear Generating Station.
