Sentinel Staff Writer GRANADA– The Granada-Huntley- East Chain School Board met on Thursday night to approve items such as the Orton-Gillingham training, raising the custodian sub-pay to $15 per hour, and approved contracts to three long-term substitute teachers. Orton-Gillingham is a teaching approach specifically designed to help struggling readers by explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds. It was created to be a multisensory approach to teaching reading. It works on the building blocks of learning how to read and Superintendent Doug Storbeck wants to build those foundational skills starting in kindergarten so that kids will enjoy reading. “I really want to build a culture where students want to read,” Storbeck said. “I feel like if they have good skills that they will like to read. Sentinel Staff Writer GRANADA The Granada-Huntley-East Chain school district is excited, and with good reason. The board had approved a contract last year to hire Star Schipper as their new ag/business education teacher for the 2020/2021 school year. Schipper is happy to have joined the district, and it shows, as she hit the ground running to get a brand new FFA program off the ground. Schipper shares her background and how she came to the area. “I was born and raised in New Prague Minnesota, and was not actually in FFA or agriculture when I was in high school because we didn’t have it at my school,” she said. “Then I went to South Dakota State University to be a vet and ended up changing my major to Ag education. I graduated with an Ag Ed degree and moved to Wilmot, South Dakota where I taught last year.” ....
[email protected] GRANADA Bob Garry recently ended a 20-year run on the Granada-Huntley-East Chain (GHEC) School Board. A former Granda-Huntley student himself, and a former math teacher whose own four children also attended, Garry reflected on his time in an interview with Superintendent Doug Storbeck. “I’ve lived in the district my whole life on the farm,” he said. “I went from Kindergarten to 12th Grade and graduated from Granada-Huntley in 1978. In the Second Grade, we had a school fire, so we spent about half a year in the bus shed until the remodeling was completed. Garry shared that he wasn’t initially sure about joining the board. ....
