Delaware Business Now Good afternoon, Amazon’s announcement that it will open two delivery centers with recharging stations for electric delivery vehicles is great news for the state’s green energy efforts. On Monday, the online giant announced additional investments in New Castle County as two new fulfillment centers prepare to open at the former GM Boxwood site west of Wilmington and in the Delaware City Logistics Park south of New Castle. The two delivery centers will serve the sites listed above. Last month, Amazon launched full-scale testing of the electric vans in Los Angeles. The manufacturer is Rivian, an EV start-up. ....
As the officer followed, he witnessed the driver weaving. The Silverado then completely left the roadway and veered back into traffic almost hitting the vehicle in the outside lane, the report said. Upon stopping the driver, the officer said he detected an odor of alcohol as LaCayo presented his driver s license and Fort Walton Beach ID. LaCayo, who told officers he had consumed two beers, was placed under arrest after failing several field sobriety tests at the scene of the traffic stop. He declined to take a breath test or answer questions. The charge is a misdemeanor. LaCayo lists a Jacksonville address as his home. Beedie said he had not yet found a residence in Fort Walton Beach. ....
Delaware Business Now The stock market craziness continues. Bloom Energy’s stock as of today was trading near just below $40 mark. The price hit $41 at one point yesterday. It’s quite a contrast from fall 2019 for the Northern California company that operates a Newark manufacturing site. Short-seller, Hindenburg, had predicted a dire fate for Bloom. At the time, Bloom’s stock price was below $4 a share. (Sadly, this writer did not take advantage of that price and owns no shares). You can credit the eagerness of investors to plow funds into alternative energy for the surge. Helping to propel that optimism further is a new administration without the love for fossil fuels we saw previously. ....
Delaware Business Now Happy New Year, Warning – You may not want to relive those memories that will come from the 30 most-read stories during the dreadful year of 2020 that come from the Delaware Business Now website. Fortunately, no blockbuster stories appeared over the holidays, although upwards of two-dozen stories were posted during this newsletter’s vacation. Of interest to readers were vaccinations and the newly imposed ban on one-use plastic bags. Links are available in this newsletter. The bulk of the 2020 stories had ties to the Covid-19 pandemic and its far-reaching consequences. The year featured an improbable presidential race with Delaware’s Joe Biden coming from behind and becoming president-elect as incumbent Donald Trump continues to claim the election was rigged. The national media found itself camped out at the Queen Theater in Wilmington and every once in a while in Rehoboth Beach, Biden’s second home. ....
Delaware Business Now The successful effort to develop a Covid-19 vaccine is known as Operation Warp Speed. The same term could be used for the fast-track effort by New Castle County to purchase the Sheraton South Hotel off Interstate 95 for use as housing for the homeless for $19.5 million. Money came from the federal CARES Act, with the former owners of the hotel managingthe site. The county gained a windfall from the CARES Act that has flowed into a number of programs that include business grants and Covid-19 testing. Under CARES provisions, counties with half a million residents secured hundreds of millions of dollars under the assumption that the units of government operate their own public health, corrections, and social service departments. In Delaware, the state handles those areas. ....
