Updated 7/4/2021 9:51 PM Retired Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall isn t sure when it ll hit him the realization that his law enforcement career is over. He s grown accustomed to the fast pace of a paramilitary lifestyle, to never being off the grid, to always making the job a priority. And if he s being honest, the idea of slowing down and stepping aside made Marshall a bit anxious in the final week of his 44-year tenure with the city.
This was my dream job, Marshall said while reflecting on his career on June 28, five days before his retirement. Settling into a chair in an office that would soon belong to his interim successor, he glanced at the awards and accolades that still hung on the walls; the Chicago Cubs decor that he had been gifted over the years; the newspaper articles, photographs and mementos that would be packed up and carried out of the department where he spent the bulk of the last four decades. ....
Naperville eyeing incentives as a way to persuade home builders to include affordable units Suzanne Baker, Naperville Sun, Ill. Jul. 1 Naperville may use incentives to encourage developers to add affordable units into their housing plans. The topic of inclusionary housing was discussed at a recent workshop meeting and the general feeling from council members, as summarized by City Manager Doug Krieger, was that offering inducements would be the easiest way to persuade home builders to include affordable housing in their projects. (Council members) don t want it to be punitive, and we don t want to do something kind of just for show, he said. We don t want to put an ordinance in place that is really not going to move the needle. ....

Updated 6/29/2021 5:41 PM Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall recognized the leadership potential in Deputy Chief Jason Arres nearly eight years ago, when he was a sergeant tasked with spearheading an initiative to install cameras in squad cars. When Arres became a patrol commander, his knowledge and proficiency were evident, Marshall said. And when he moved into the office of professional standards and became the public information officer, he demonstrated the communication skills needed to one day lead the department. ....
Deputy police chief to fill in as interim chief while Naperville does search for Marshall s successor Naperville Sun, Ill. Jun. 30 Naperville s deputy police chief will serve as interim chief when Robert Marshall retires Friday after 44-year career with the city. Jason Arres, currently in charge of the patrol division, will oversee daily operations and the department s 275 employees while city officials conduct a search for Marshall s successor, a city news release said. Public management consulting firm GovHR has been tapped to conduct a nationwide search for candidates, which is expected to include internal applicants. Finalists will be invited to participate in a series of panel interviews with city leaders, elected officials, police/union representatives and community members. The process is expected to take up to 16 weeks to complete. ....
No leeway granted to Naperville property owner on sprinkler system requirements
Updated 5/5/2021 4:52 PM While considering whether to give a commercial property owner an additional two years to install a sprinkler system, the Naperville City Council chose fire safety enforcement over providing economic relief. In a 6-3 vote Tuesday, council members shot down a request from Rich Janor of Janor Properties LLC to defer the deadline for bringing his vacant building at 1111 S. Washington St. into compliance with the city s fire suppression requirements.
Facing challenges in his efforts to sell or lease the property, Janor was asking the council for a seven-year extension of a fire suppression agreement that expired April 14, pointing to the hardships presented by the recent pandemic resulting in ongoing retail/commercial vacancies in Naperville. ....
