Editorial: The changing face of downtown Estevan


People who attend can look forward to live music and food trucks, in addition to the assortment of vendors you’d expect at an outdoor market.   
We praised the idea when it was brought forward in early March of last year. Unfortunately, COVID forced the plans to be delayed until this year.  
And while this damn pandemic is far from over, the Downtown Business Association is confident that they can pull off this idea safely, in much the same way that the Estevan Farmers’ Market held their outdoor markets last year without issue. (We’re confident in the Farmers’ Market’s ability to hold markets safely this year, too, starting May 8).   ....

The scope may be vast, but council has determined the best way forward to recover on all fronts from COVID-19.
During the latest regular council meeting on Tuesday, April 27, local officials unanimously accepted the final report from the COVID-19 Recovery Task Force formed by council to adapt economic, social and governing programs, policies, and services following the pandemic in the short, medium and long term. ....

ELK RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) Leaders of a northern Michigan town desperate for peace have voted to chip in to hire a Canadian man who specializes in healing public conflicts.
Doug Griffiths is the author of “13 Ways to Kill Your Community.” Elk Rapids, about 20 miles northeast of Traverse City, believes it needs his help.
Some members of the Downtown Development Association resigned over whether to close a downtown street. The local library board has been a regular source of tension. Village President Jim Janisse recently apologized for using coarse words, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported. ....

Owners of proposed car wash make appeal to council


Darryl Mack and Sylvain Blouin spoke to council at the March 8 meeting, with Mack appearing in council chambers and Blouin speaking via video feed from Edmonton. In a presentation that lasted about 40 minutes, they spoke about the challenges they have faced over the past eight years, and answered questions from council members. 
“A lot of things that people don’t understand about this city is it’s always been a strong place to do business, and we want to make sure, somehow, we can get this business off the ground,” Mack told council.  
In a letter to council, Blouin wrote the lots adjacent to their property in the Glen Peterson Industrial Park are now available for $1. They paid $590,105, plus GST, for their parcel.  ....
