Bill Miller went to be with the Lord on May 3, 2021.
He was the son of James A. and Joan E. (Johnson) Miller and grew up with eight siblings in the East Town of Dunkirk.
Bill graduated from Dunkirk High School and married Barbara Crandall in 1977. They had four children together, Christina (Paul Launier), Lynn Ciancio, Daniel (Jessica), and David. They grew up with love and mischief that was often fueled by their father.
In 2011, Bill married Patricia Waite. Cassandra Smith and Ken Smith joined his family that now totaled six children, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Bill was light-hearted and easy going. He enjoyed fishing, campfires, and being with the people that he loved. He was a man that didn’t ask for much but was quick to lend a hand when needed or just a visit to chew the fat. ....

BOCES sponsors COVID-19 vaccine pop-up clinic
Erie 2 Board of Cooperative Educational Services will be sponsoring a COVID-19 vaccine pop-up clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at 21 E. Second St. in Dunkirk.
To reserve a time slot, residents are asked to call 949-8450 or email [email protected] to register before Thursday. The clinic is being administered by The Chautauqua Center and Erie 2 Chautauqua Cattaraugus BOCES.
This is first dose Moderna clinic for anyone 18 and older. The BOCES literacy program will be on site with registration, provide translators for Spanish-speaking residents, offer light refreshments while registering and waiting after the vaccine. ....

Beatrice Price and her brother, Leon, died of COVID-19 within less than two weeks of each other.
High school students in northern Chautauqua County and Gowanda High School who are considering employment in education or a closely related field can now apply for two new scholarships that are being offered in honor of Beatrice and Leon Price, respectively, both Dunkirk residents who recently died as a result of COVID-19.
Applicants must be in the upper third of their graduating class and submit the application to the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation by May 17. Applications are available from high school guidance offices or by contacting the Scholarship Coordinator, Victoria Howell-Siracuse at [email protected].” ....

A former Dunkirk resident is celebrating a significant birthday today.
Mary Lynch Cummings was born at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk on April 26, 1921, to James and Helena Lynch. She graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1938 and received her teaching degree from New York State University. She then moved to Buffalo were she worked at Bell Aircraft.
In 1944, she contacted Florence Erikson, her physical education teacher in high school, about how she could become an officer in the Navy during World War II. After six weeks of training at Smith College, she realized her dream of becoming an officer in the WAVES, the women’s reserve. She was sent to Sea Island, Ga., for radar training and was then stationed in Vero Beach, Fla., as an air controller. After the cold winters of Western New York, she enjoyed the sunny days in Florida. ....
