Deceased Californians who are nonbinary will be able to be identified as such on their death certificates under legislation Governor Gavin Newsom signed July 9. It is the first LGBTQ-related bill that the governor approved this legislative session, with 10 more currently making their way through the Legislature.
Assemblywoman Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda) authored the death certificate bill, Assembly Bill 439. It was one of a slew of bills that Newsom signed into law late Friday without comment.
Another bill he signed that Bauer-Kahan authored, AB 378, will update state codes to refer to statewide elected officials by gender-neutral pronouns. Currently, the codes use only male pronouns. ....

California Lawmakers Extend Moratorium for Online Charter Schools
California lawmakers have extended a moratorium on non-classroom based charters to 2025.
AB 130, a multibillion-dollar educational budget bill, mandates that no new online charter schools are allowed to open until at least 2025. However, it does not hinder operations of existing online charters.
The existing moratorium was enacted by AB 1505 by Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell (D-Long Beach), and was originally set to expire Jan. 1, 2022.
“That is a continuation of the incessant multi-year effort of public education to level down, or to impose on charter schools, the same fetters that have made the rest of education mediocre and California mediocre to a failure,” Senator Jim Nielsen (R-Tehama) told The Epoch Times. ....

No matter the outcome of the special election for the East Bay s 18th Assembly District seat, one thing is now guaranteed. A woman of color is set to represent Alameda, San Leandro, and a portion of Oakland in the California Legislature come September.
The winner will bring the number of female Bay Area state lawmakers up to five, as the rest of the 23 legislative seats that circle the region are held by men. And should social justice attorney Janani Ramachandran be elected, she will be the first LGBTQ state legislator from the East Bay.
Ramachandran, 29, would also be the first legislator who identifies as queer and first out API female state legislator. Of South Indian ancestry, she would also be California s first South Asian assemblywoman. ....
