State and federal elected leaders were quick to respond to Attorney General Letitia James report that Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed current and former staffers and created a verbally abusive and toxic workplace environment. Cuomo retaliated after the announcement in a pre-recorded video message.
The White House called the findings abhorrent.
I don t know that anyone could have watched [James press conference] this morning and not found the allegations to be abhorrent, said White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki. I know I certainly did.
Later in the day, President Joe Biden called on Cuomo to resign during remarks at a White House news conference. ....

Local leaders react: Canadian government announces border reopening timeline

WATERTOWN — The Canadian government announced Thursday that the country will begin allowing vaccinated Americans to cross its borders for nonessential travel starting Aug. 9 — months after calls from American leaders to end the border closure.
As vaccination rates rose and infection rates for COVID-19 dropped, officials including Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, and a litany of local leaders from the north country, called for Canada to welcome Americans back into their country, and allow Canadians to cross into and out of the United States.
Those first steps seem to be coming soon, but the White House pumped the brakes Monday. According to the Associated Press, White House Press Secretary Jennifer R. Psaki said the U.S. would not commit to reopening their side of the border on Aug. 9. ....

In the early days of the pandemic, the U.S. and Canadian governments closed the more than 5,500-mile border to nonessential traffic. With increasing vaccination rates and dropping infection rates, some were annoyed the two governments hadn’t laid out detailed plans to fully reopen the border.
Canada began easing its restrictions earlier this month, allowing fully vaccinated Canadians or permanent legal residents to return to Canada without quarantining. But among the requirements are a negative test for the virus before returning, and another once they get back. ....
