Legislative staffer apologizes to Native American families

SANTA FE Rachel Gudgel a top legislative aide who was reprimanded last year after allegations that she made disparaging comments about Native Americans has issued a letter of apology to New Mexico’s tribal leaders, students and families.
But she also faced new calls this week to resign or be removed from her position, including comments by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who said she would have fired Gudgel if she worked for the administration.
In a letter to New Mexico’s tribes, nations, pueblos and their children and families, Gudgel said she made insensitive comments that were “insulting and harmful” and that she was reprimanded by her employer, the Legislative Education Study Committee, where she serves as director. ....

SANTA FE – After winning approval in the Senate, a bill banning the trapping of fur-bearing animals on New Mexico public lands is facing a race to navigate the House in just over a week to end up on Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s desk for final approval.
Supporters of the bill, Senate Bill 32, were optimistic about their chances on Wednesday, a day after the Senate passed the bill in a late-night vote.

Although similar legislation has been proposed in past years, the Tuesday vote marked the first time such a bill has cleared either legislative chamber. ....
