TALLAHASSEE Gabriella Passidomo, a daughter of an influential state senator, was appointed Monday by Gov. Ron DeSantis to a seat on the Florida Public Service Commission.
Passidomo, who since 2019 has worked as a PSC attorney, will move to a $135,997-a-year position on the five-member commission, which regulates and sets rates for such things as electric, natural gas and water utilities.
A brief news release from the governor’s office said Passidomo - a daughter of Senate Rules Chairwoman Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples - is an attorney in the regulatory analysis section of the PSC general counsel’s office and that, as a student, spent time as a legal intern in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of the Assistant General Counsel for Electricity and Fossil Energy.  ....

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - State Rep. Scott Plakon and a daughter of Senate Rules Chairwoman Kathleen Passidomo were among four finalists forwarded Monday to Gov. Ron DeSantis for a seat on the Florida Public Service Commission.
After short introductions and interviews of five candidates, the Florida Public Service Commission Nominating Council advanced with little comment four applicants to replace former longtime Commissioner Julie Brown in the job that pays $135,997 a year.
Brown was appointed in February by DeSantis as secretary of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.  ....

House passes measures aimed at COVID-19 lawsuits, scams

The Florida House on Friday passed two COVID-19 bills that Republican leaders made a priority for the 2021 legislative session, as they seek to protect businesses from lawsuits and crack down on vaccination scams.
House members voted 83-31 to approve a bill (HB 7), sponsored by Rep. Lawrence McClure, R-Dover, that would shield businesses from lawsuits related to COVID-19. Republicans touted the legislation as a must-pass bill to protect Florida’s economy and return people to work, but many Democrats decried it as being overly broad and eliminating the public’s access to courts.
House Minority Co-leader Evan Jenne, D-Dania Beach, said procedural hurdles that plaintiffs would have to overcome to file COVID-19-related lawsuits are “so gargantuan they invoke names like Everest, Kilimanjaro and Denali.” ....
