Police opened a modern slavery probe after finding two men living in filthy conditions at an abandoned department store on the South coast. Sussex Police officers stormed the former TJ Hughes site in Eastbourne on Thursday after receiving a tip-off from the public. Two Romanian men were found sleeping inside the building, with no hot water, heating or flushing toilets. Officers said the site was filthy, with at least three mattresses lying on the floor next to rubbish, scratchcards and an electric heater for warmth. A tip-off from a member of the public led police in Eastbourne, Sussex, to find two Romanian men, suspected of being victims of modern slavery, living inside the town s abandoned TJ Hughes department store on Tuesday ....
The former Co-op building on Sankey Street is on the market for £1.9million. It has also been used by TJ Hughes and a 99p store in recent years but has largely been empty recently. A small supermarket, Food Plus, currently operates from part of the ground floor. Food Plus has a lease until 2022 The building is four-storey and the listings says there is residential development opportunity for the upper floors. No planning permission is in place however. The whole building has not been open since the days of the Co-op department store which closed in 1997. It later operated as TJ Hughes department store until it closed in 2011. ....
