The State of Rhode Island is going to spend fifty thousand dollars on an official portrait of former governor Gina Raimondo. Really?
There is nothing wrong with honoring our past chief executives with an image in the State House. It is honorable, too, to actually pay a too often underappreciated and undervalued artist for their work.
The current Secretary of Commerce deserves her place in the pantheon of Governors of Rhode Island. The problem is the word official. Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Daniel J. McKee is sworn in as governor by Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea in the State House on Tuesday evening. Holding the family Bible is his wife, Susan McKee. McKee was joined by his son Matthew, daughter Kara and future daughter in law Laura Clifford.

Last Sunday’s Journal had a story about preparations being made at locations where the Rhode Island General Assembly will meet this year, rather than in the State House. One of those places is Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. In the late 1940s, the auditorium was being prepared, but for its grand opening. The decorations included ceiling paintings of the emblems from all the cities and towns in Rhode Island. The venue underwent major renovations decades later, as did its neighbor, the former Masonic Temple, which is now the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel. ....
