Newfoundland and Labrador backs off plan to rename Red Indian Lake after criticism


Indigenous Affairs Minister Lisa Dempster said the statement s signatories arrived at a unanimous consensus Wednesday to halt the plans after she shared some of the public feedback with the Indigenous leaders.
I understand people s attachment to place, I understand the emotion, Dempster told reporters Thursday. I think what we need to understand here is Red Indian Lake is no longer an acceptable name, and whatever that next step is, we will find out in the coming weeks.
Red Indian Lake sits in the central interior of Newfoundland, about 530 kilometres northwest of St. John s, at the end of a long, two-lane road that connects the towns of Buchans, Millertown and Buchans Junction. Collectively, they re home to about 795 people. ....

Red Indian Lake name change not a done deal after all


Dempster said Red Indian Lake is being considered as the final resting place of Demasduit and Nonosabasut, but there was consensus among Indigenous leaders the name was not appropriate. She said Wantaqo ti Qospem was agreed upon by Indigenous leaders, which is why the province moved forward with the change.
Since that time there s been a high volume of feedback, and I ve actually read most of them, Dempster said. 
Name change fostered mistrust
Joe told CBC News on Thursday he s OK with renaming the lake something else, and the idea came about while looking for a peaceful place for a monument to Nonosabasut and Demasduit along the shore. The monument was designed by a young Mi kmaw girl, Joe said, adding the process has had Mi kmaq involvement the whole way through. ....
