SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Three endangered Chacoan peccaries were born at the Potawatomi Zoo on April 16, the Zoo announced Wednesday.
The three peclets, whose sex is still undetermined, were born to mom Pepa and dad Tapo.
This is the fifth litter of Chacoan Peccaries born at the Zoo since 2019.
Chacoan peccaries can breed all year long and have a gestation period of 151 days.
“Chacoan peccaries are endangered in their native habitat, the Gran Chaco region of South America, so we’re very excited to be a part of this animal’s Species Survival Plan,” says Josh Sisk, executive director of the Potawatomi Zoo. “Very little is known about the way these animals breed and raise their young, so we have the opportunity to add to the knowledge base and hopefully help this species someday recover in the wild.” ....

New babies at Potawatomi Zoo include Chacoan peccaries and an armadillo

The birth of the three Chacoan peccaries is significant because theyâre on the endangered species list as a result of overhunting and habitat fragmentation, Sisk said. A pig-like animal, the peccaries are natives of Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay.
Sisk said itâs too early to tell the gender of the babies, but they likely will be split up eventually to help other zoos that are also working to expand the population of the endangered species. It is the third time that peccary babies have been born at the zoo.
The zoo has had numerous other successes through the years breeding both endangered and non-endangered animals â including a flamingo and peccaries last year, Sichuan takins in 2019 and many more through the years. ....

Potawatomi Zoo debuts ‘Eat and Drink at the Zoo’ this May

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Potawatomi Zoo is debuting a new food and beverage event this May, inviting Michiana to sample different products from vendors around the local region.
On May 15 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., locals can enjoy, “Eat and Drink at the Zoo,” a tasting event for adults 21 and over.
Tickets are $75 per person and give guests full access to all food and drink samples and unlimited rides on the Potawatomi Zoo Express and Endangered Species Carousel.
A limited number of VIP tables are available. These VIP guests will have a reserved table, early entry to the event, and the chance to meet the Zoo’s southern white rhino, Masamba. ....
