Brisbane Roar continue A-League dominance over Mariners

The Roar held sway for long periods at Central Coast Stadium on Wednesday night, Macaulay Gillesphey scoring in the 19th minute and Joey Champness bagging a bellringer in the 56th before late shows to Alex Parsons and Masato Kudo.
It was a night to forget on home turf for the Mariners, who also lost key forward Marco Urena to a 62nd-minute red card for an ugly challenge on Jay O Shea.
Arguably the form team of the competition with three consecutive wins, the Roar are now just a point out of the top six and have a game in hand over most sides. ....

Matchweek 12 of the 2020/21 A-League campaign comes to a close with Central Coast Mariners six points clear at the top of the table.

Sydney FC beat Newcastle Jets 2-1 to move into fifth, whilst Macarthur FC fell from second to sixth after losing 3-0 to City.
Melbourne Victory, meanwhile, remain bottom of the table after a 3-1 Original Rivalry loss to the Reds. Grant Brebner s side remain on seven points, four points behind both Newcastle and Wellington Phoenix who lost to the Sky Blues and Wanderers respectively in Matchweek 12. ....

Mariners demand explanation from A-League chiefs over controversial refereeing calls

Match official Adam Fielding and video assistant referee Kurt Ams faced a social media blizzard - and the ire of the Mariners hierarchy - over their handling of the match, in particular the validity of all three spot-kicks (each tucked away by Tomi Juric for a hat-trick).
VAR had a big say in two of those penalties - upholding the first (a theatrical tumble by Stefan Mauk) and calling play back for the Reds third (after a perceived handball at the other end).
Having crumpled at the feet of Ruon Tongyik for the first, Mauk crashed to the ground again after the merest of contacts with Joshua Nisbet for the second penalty in yet another bone of contention for the Mariners. ....
