Nora Funk lives in Nanaimo, B.C., but is originally from Stephenville. She is learning to speak Mi kmaw after wanting to learn more about her culture.(Submitted by Nora Funk)
When Nora Funk was growing up in Stephenville on the west coast of Newfoundland, she always felt her Mi kmaw ties to the land. After moving to Manitoba at 16 and beginning to increasingly experience her Indigenous culture, she knew she wanted to learn more.
Funk, who now lives in Nanaimo, B.C., told CBC Radio s Weekend AM earlier this month that she hadn t been taking part in Mi kmaw culture before she moved, because it was almost lost in Newfoundland. ....

Except for a historic venture into the politics of Newfoundland, Ed Finn was not one to generate headlines. He was a behind-the-scenes guy. Over a career that spanned nearly 70 years, Mr. Finn used his skills as a communicator and strategist to advance unions and progressive causes ranging from the bitter Newfoundland loggers’ strike in 1959 to the fierce fight for medicare in Saskatchewan to the anti-free trade movement to myriad union battles across the country.
He also brought the views of labour into the mainstream media with a long-running weekly column in the Toronto Star. The column developed a strong following because it went beyond union rhetoric. Mr. Finn steered his own course, often irritating labour leaders by taking positions that strayed from their official line. ....

Ed Finn, a journalist and politician, died Sunday at 94.(Edfinn.ca)
Ed Finn, the first leader of the New Democratic Party in Newfoundland and Labrador, has died at 94.
Finn, a rabble-rousing union man, journalist and politician from Spaniard s Bay, spent much of his 70-year career promoting economic justice across Canada.
Finn began his career in journalism in Corner Brook, first as a printer s apprentice and then as a reporter and editor at the Western Star.
He later reported for the Montreal Gazette and wrote a regular labour column for the Toronto Star. He also served as editor of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives magazine, The Monitor, for 20 years, retiring in 2014. ....
