Supporters and opponents of short-term rentals said Wednesday that they favor increased oversight in Dallas but were split on whether the city should allow them to continue operating or impose a ban. Nearly 100 people spoke during a Dallas City Council public hearing on regulating rooms and homes advertised on Airbnb, VRBO and other platforms. Dallas currently doesn’t have rules for short-term rentals. Owners should register with the city and pay hotel occupancy taxes, but most of them don’t do either. The city also doesn’t have an effective way to enforce fines or punish property owners with the most complaints. ....
Blewett and District 9 council member Paula Blackmon helped lead a short-term rental task force that presented several recommendations to the Quality of Life, Arts, and Culture Committee on Tuesday, including occupancy and noise limits. During the virtual meeting, Blewett said many of his constituents would like to see an outright ban on short-term rentals.
