The Oakland A’s got to add a 27th player to their active roster yesterday to help with their doubleheader, but that means someone has to go down today to reduce the roster back to 26.
That odd player out is reliever
Jordan Weems, who was optioned to the alternate site, the team announced Wednesday morning.
Usually when a team adds the extra player for a doubleheader, they do so by calling someone up from the minors and then sending the same player down at the end of the day, but the A’s took a different path this time. On Tuesday they simply activated lefty reliever ....

Oakland A's Game #15: A's shut out Detroit Tigers for second straight day, run winning streak to seven

The Oakland A’s haven’t allowed a run since Thursday.
The A’s blanked the Detroit Tigers on Saturday by a 7-0 margin, tossing a shutout for the second game in a row. Oakland’s winning streak is now seven games, including the last three against the Tigers, pushing their record above .500 for the first time this year.
After a disastrous beginning to the year, the A’s pitching staff is finding its groove against the rebuilding Tigers. Oakland allowed an average of nine runs per game through their first five losses this year, or one turn through the starting rotation. After a dozen games, even with the team winning, they were still letting through six per contest. ....

Oakland A's Game #12: A's lineup keeps humming against Arizona Diamondbacks in fourth straight win

While the final result was familiar, this game followed a script we haven’t yet seen in 2021. The A’s fell behind early, spotting Arizona a 5-0 lead by the 2nd inning. But the D’Backs never scored again, and Oakland launched a late comeback against the bullpen that put them over the top
plus insurance.
The first run seemed harmless enough, as
Stephen Piscotty blasted a solo homer in the 4th. They were still down by a lot, but at least they definitely wouldn’t be shut out.
Don’t write off Piscotty just yet. Through 32 plate appearances he’s got a 131 wRC+, and Statcast says that’s an understatement of well he’s swung. And that’s not counting the foul-homer he hit against Clayton Kershaw, which is still relevant in this small of a sample size. Today’s dinger went 404 feet. ....

I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised to catch Zac Gallen’s first start of the season, though given how quickly he was back after that weird stress fracture in his arm, I wasn’t sure what to expect. While he wasn’t particularly sharp no perfectly clean innings and big pitch counts in each inning he pitched he still looked pretty good. So that was nice.
After going up 0-2 on A’s leadoff batter Mark Canha, Gallen threw the next four pitches for balls, which wasn’t a good sign, and one out later he surrendered a Jed Lowrie single to shallow left, advancing Canha to third. Then he rallied, though, and struck out the next two batters on four pitches each to wriggle off the hook. He pitched around traffic in the second and third innings, due to another single, another walk, and an uncharacteristic Nick Ahmed fielding error in the third, but managed to put up goose eggs in each frame. ....
