THE STANDARD NATIONAL Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye will jet into the country on Monday, May 31 to attend Tuesday’s Madaraka Day celebrations. According to sources within the government, President Ndayishimiye might be the only foreign Head of State to grace the ceremony, which will be held in Kisumu County. East African Community (EAC) recently named President Ndayishimiye as rapporteur while President Kenyatta was chosen as the community’s chairperson. On May 18, Kisumu surpassed Nairobi County in the number of Covid-19 cases reported in the country. It recorded 102 cases. On May 19 the county recorded the second-highest number of cases (64) in the country. Dr Patrick Amoth, the Ministry of Health acting Director-General, on May 5th, reported that 5 cases of Indian variant been discovered in the country before the country banned flights from India. “We picked this from a sample of Indian travellers who are doing some work in the western part of Kisumu. The governor was responding to calls by a section of local residents who want the celebration to be moved to another county following increased Covid-19 cases in the lakeside region. A high-level team of government officials led by Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho visited the Sh350 million facility on Thursday to assess its ability to host the celebrations to commemorate the day the country attained internal self-rule. Kibicho who is the National Celebrations Committee chairman said, We will hold the celebrations at the stadium for a few, but we have also identified a number of areas where people will gather to follow the celebrations virtually. ....
