CENTENARIANS were rare a century ago. Nowadays there are 14,000 over the age of 100 in the United Kingdom. But, in 1914, when Joseph Bamford of Endmoor reached 100, the happy event knocked the Great War out of The Westmorland Gazette’s headlines. Sadly, having lived through 99 years of peace, ‘Old Joe’s’ birthday was spoiled by news that his grandson had been taken as a prisoner of war on the Western Front. He had earlier lost a grandson in the Boer War. He was, nevertheless, not totally bereft, as he calculated that he had 120 descendants comprising three sons, four daughters, ‘about’ 90 grandchildren , 30-40 great-grandchildren ‘and the branches of his genealogical tree ramify into the fifth generation’.
