Hurricane forecasting has advantages over pandemic forecasting. If people follow an evacuation order and no one dies, the hurricane still leaves behind floods and downed trees and plenty of justification for the order.
With a pandemic, closing businesses and schools might prevent sickness and death, but also eliminate evidence of what might have been. That makes it harder to argue against people who claim overreaction or overreach.

The Duncans calculated and prolonged abuse included physical punishment, depriving the children of food, water, heat and bathroom privileges, and trying to cover up their crimes, according to prosecutors.

Anticipation was indeed so great that all 3,000 appointments were claimed within about 18 hours of their announcement, Dowd said. Supply is limited such that vaccinations can only take place by appointment, currently of those that are in category 1A, per state rules.
