Ranchi: The spread of Covid-19 in Jharkhand’s rural areas has been negligible during the ongoing second wave contrary to the fears that the virus has made inroads into the remote places infecting scores of villagers, a state government survey has found. The Intensive Public Health Survey (IPHS) of the health department ended on Saturday and was carried out from May 25 using Rapid Antigen Test kits. The virus had wreaked havoc in the state throughout April with the daily average cases being reported in four-digit figures (new cases) and triple-digit figures (deaths). The majority of the hospitals in the state’s urban centres virtually ran out of beds, triggering fears of a rapid spread of the virus in the rural areas. Concerned over the situation, the government rolled out a mega door-to-door health survey in the rural areas coupled with rapid antigen testing for early detection and treatment. ....

Ranchi: Considered a game changer in the treatment of Covid-19 patients, the antibody cocktail is now available at the Raj Hospital and Research Centre in Ranchi. The cocktail of two monoclonal antibodies casirivimab and imdevimab can be used on mild and moderate Covid patients and is known to reduce the chances of hospitalization by 70%. The proprietor of Raj Hospital, Jogesh Gambhir, said the medical fraternity was eagerly waiting for this ‘wonder drug’ to arrive in India after the Centre granted emergency-use authorisation. “It arrived in Delhi on May 26 and we are the first in Jharkhand to obtain the consignment. Although the single-dose drug is costly and priced at around Rs 60,000, we are hopeful that people in the high-risk groups can be prevented from slipping into emergency condition by the use of this drug,” Gambhir said. ....

Ranchi: The Covid-19 toll in Ranchi breached the 1,000-mark on Tuesday and the state capital has emerged as the worst-hit among all 24 districts in Jharkhand. A major chunk of the casualties has been reported since mid-March during the second wave of the pandemic – the toll stood at 250 on March 16 and rose rapidly to 1,010 on Tuesday. The overall positivity rate in the district has reached 10.52% from a low of 0.7% during the peak of first wave in August 2020. The positivity rate in May this year is at an all-time high of 19.15% indicating that one of every five samples tested are found to be infected with the novel coronavirus. The figure for April 2021 was 18.76% when the second wave started rising from 5.25% in March. ....
