Guwahati, May 4 : The number of women legislators in the 126-member Assam Assembly has been declining from a high of 14 in 2011, eight in 2016 and only six this time.
In all 74 women candidates (7.8 per cent) among the total of 946 aspirants contested the recently held three-phase Assam Assembly elections and only six of them entered into the Assembly three are of the ruling BJP, one of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and two of opposition Congress.
In the previous Assam Assembly elections in 2016, 91 women candidates were in the fray with eight of them elected to the 126-member House while in 2011, 85 women had tried their electoral fate and 14, highest so far in the House, secured the success. ....

Pro-Delhi stir farmers urge voters to end NDA rule in state | Guwahati News

GUWAHATI: A group of 15 peasants’ activists, who joined the Delhi farmers’ protests against the three farm laws under the aegis of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), concluded a marathon campaign in four legislative constituencies in the agrarian belt on the south of Brahmaputra in Kamrup district on Sunday, and urged people to reject the BJP-led NDA in the state.
This zone has been a nerve centre of farmers’ activism since the days of communist revolutionary Bishnu Prasad Rava.
The group during the campaign, which was started on March 1, urged voters to reject the “anti-farmer” BJP and its key ally AGP in the elections by distributing pamphlets, holding street corner meetings and campaigning in shops and commercial establishments against farm bills and price rise. ....

Assam Assembly polls: AGP releases third list of 13 candidates

The AGP, an alliance partner of the ruling BJP-led combine in Assam, on Sunday released its third list of candidates containing 13 names, including minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury and Bhojpuri singer Kalpana Patowary, for the assembly polls in the state.
Names of three sitting MLAs also feature in the list declared by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita for the third and last phase of polling on April 6.
Apart from Phani Bhushan Choudhury who will contest from Bongaigaon, the other sitting MLAs are Kalita himself who will be in the fray from Guwahati West and Gunindra Nath Das from Barpeta constituency. ....
