Imperial Irrigation District directors fighting one another in court

Members of the Imperial Irrigation District board of directors are pitted against one another in a months-long battle that has spilled from public meetings to controversial closed-door sessions and now into a courtroom. At stake is an agreement with organized labor that will determine who gets tens of millions of dollars of IID business.
Only days before a new board was seated in December 2020 and after major campaign contributions by unions failed to gain support for their preferred candidates IID s outgoing board quickly pushed through a project labor agreement, or PLA. This group of contracts, approved on a 3-2 vote, would for the next decade set the terms of the labor IID must use for projects expected to cost $750,000 or more. ....

IID devises alert system for high demand periods

IMPERIAL â In an effort to mitigate the surge in electrical demand during the summer months, Imperial Irrigation District has a new alert system to promote energy conservation during times when electricity may be in short supply.
IID said its new Conserve Alert notifications will begin this summer and will urge voluntary participation from customers to reduce demands on the grid during times of peak usage.
âOur new Conserve Alerts are a means to raise awareness and (promote) action to avert rotating power outages when energy supply margins are tight,â said IID Board President James Hanks. âOur customers have always been great to voluntarily curb energy use when asked. We really appreciate that and hope for more participation this summer.â ....

Salem man charged with attempted robbery of a Columbia Walmart

A Salem man is charged Thursday for robbery after an incident at the Walmart Supercenter off Conley Road.
According to police, James Hanks, 37, of Salem, also threatened an employee while demanding money on April 29.
Officials say officers found and arrested Hanks on Tuesday for an unrelated warrant.
The Department’s Criminal investigations Division then identified Hanks as the suspect in the attempted robbery.
Hanks is charged with first degree attempted robbery.

SHERMAN – Thompson “Toby” Willis Hanks Jr., 79, of Sherman, N.Y., and formerly of New York City, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021, at the Absolut Care Nursing Home in Westfield, N.Y.
He was born July 3, 1941, in Beaumont, Texas, the son of the late Thompson W. Hanks Sr. and Letty Fields Hanks.
Toby was a musician with the New York City Ballet and an educator with the Manhattan School of Music. He also played in the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra for 40 years and was a freelance musician. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians.
Toby enjoyed playing tennis, as well as blue grass and jazz music in the local Chautauqua area. ....
