IS Scotland a colony? Recently, Tom Arthur, the SNP MSP for Renfrew South, found himself in the middle of a social media firestorm. All Under One Banner (AUOB) – the non-party movement that has kept the indy movement alive by organising very successful marches – had called a protest outside the new Scotland Office in Edinburgh, aka Queen Elizabeth House. AUOB dubbed the new building a “colonial” outpost. To this “colonialist” nomenclature Mr Arthur took exception, calling it “historically illiterate nonsense”. He went on: “Scotland is not a colony. Offices for civil servants do not betoken imperial overlordship. At any time, though particularly in the middle of a pandemic, this just looks unhinged.” ....
