LOD, Israel Israel’s prime minister declared a state of emergency Wednesday in response to riots spreading across the country that led to schools, synagogues and cars being set ablaze in Jewish neighbourhoods, as the president blamed the chaos on a “bloodthirsty Arab mob.”
A curfew was imposed in the central city of Lod, and the wave of violence spread to cities including Haifa, Acre and Ramla, as Hamas fired hundreds of rockets and Israel continued to bomb the crowded coastal enclave of Gaza.

The Financial Times report on the historic visit of Pope Francis to Iraq. The papers note that the Pope decided to travel despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and security risks. The Pope will arrive in Iraq today for a four-day visit aimed at supporting the country’s shrinking Christian community and promoting inter-religious dialogue. Despite a rocket attack on US military positions in Iraq early this week, the Pope has vowed to go ahead with the visit, even amid risks to his personal safety, saying it was an “act of love” to show solidarity with the country’s Christian community. This will be the first papal visit to Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion. ....

A runaway train packed with 80 passengers ploughed through the buffers, demolished the ticket office and burst out of the railway station before coming to a halt on a taxi.

James Greaney is originally from Co Galway, but is living in the Middle Eastern state for work.
He received his second coronavirus vaccine last Thursday.
