NEW DELHI – India on Thursday dispatched a deep submergence rescue vessel to Bali to help in locating the Indonesian submarine KRI Nanggala, missing since Wednesday with 53 sailors aboard.
Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh talked with his Indonesian counterpart on April 22 pledging India’s full support to Indonesia in finding the vessel.
“India is committed to assist our strategic partners during times of need. Please accept my concern and best wishes to a successful rescue,” Singh wrote on Twitter. ....

NEW DELHI: India has dispatched a deep submergence rescue vessel (DSRV) to help in the ongoing search and rescue operation for the Indonesian diesel-powered submarine that went missing with 53 sailors on board around the Bali Strait on Wednesday.
The Indian Navy’s DSRV, basically a mini-submarine that dives to “mate’’ with a “disabled’’ submarine to extricate sailors trapped deep underwater, was sent on board its “mother ship” Sabarmati from Vizag on Thursday morning.
The DSRV can locate a submarine in distress up to a 1,000-meter depth utilizing its state-of-the-art side scan sonar and a remotely-operated vehicle. After the disabled submarine is successfully located, another submodule of the system called the submarine rescue vehicle (SRV) can “mate” with the disabled submarine to rescue the trapped personnel up to a depth of around 650-metre. The SRV can also be used to provide emergency supplies to the submarine in distress. ....

MELBOURNE, Australia – An Indonesian submarine with 53 personnel on board has gone missing in deep waters during a training exercise, with a submarine rescue vessel from Singapore already on its way to assist in the search.
The German-built Type 209 diesel-electric submarine KRI Nanggala was declared missing in the early hours of Wednesday morning local time in waters north of the Indonesian resort island of Bali after it failed to report the results of a torpedo drill it was undertaking at the time, according to an Indonesian navy spokesman quoted by Reuters. ....
