More snow and ice had coated the tracks, so the season-ending Hampton Bays meet had to be canceled. Coach Kevin Barry was philosophical about the abrupt end to the season. “We got four of five meets run,” he said. “Some other schools only ended up with 2 meets.”

Track teams take on Southampton in frigid weather: Boys and girls post outstanding performances

(Credit: Kaitlyn Gullusico) While extremely cold conditions 19 degrees with a windchill of 10 degrees limited what events were completed, the Shelter Island girls track team put together another gritty performance against host Southampton on Jan. 31. Head to head in the completed competitions, the Islanders bested the Mariners, scoring 22 points to Southampton’s 18. In the field events, Sophie Clark took 2nd place with a 23-foot shot put, while teammate Kaitlyn Gulluscio threw 20 feet, outdistancing her last meet’s throw by 11 inches. The sand pit was frozen solid, so the long and triple jumps were not attempted.

Track teams brave conditions for successful meet: Take on large schools on the road

However, Shelter Island’s girls track team bundled up and made the trip over to Babylon under bright blue skies for their second meet of the season to compete against Babylon and Southold/Greenport. The team had their full roster of nine athletes. Southold had an equal number, while Babylon had 30 girls available. In track, each athlete is limited to three events, so a small team can not enter as many events as a larger school, which makes it difficult to win a meet. Babylon scored 75 points to Shelter Island’s 15, while the Southold/Shelter Island head to head score was quite close at 36 to 32.
