Minister for Children Roderic O Gorman has pledged to meet the three men featured in a report by RTÉ s Prime Time on the State s boarding-out system, calling the abuse they faced in foster care absolutely appalling .
He said their cases will be considered by an interdepartmental group that is looking at the question of redress.
The minister said he hopes a report will be published on the matter by the end of April.
I want to meet with them so I can better understand them, so that I can engage with Government on this issue , he said, speaking on RTÉ s Drivetime programme. ....

Abused foster children 'entitled to redress'

When he was eight years old, James Sugrue was fostered out to live on a farm with an elderly couple and their adult son in Kilgarvan, Co Kerry. 
James and his two brothers – Michael and David – had been abandoned by their mother at the County Home in Killarney in 1959. Their father was in London for work.
Over the course of several years, James and Michael were abused, isolated and worked like slaves.
We are the forgotten children, James, who is now 69 years old, told Prime Time. 
Tens of thousands of children were were fostered out, or boarded out , in a system arranged by the State, according to Prof Conor O Mahony, the Special Rapporteur on Child Protection. ....

Banteer's Paul shoots to victory in the Emirates Amateur Open


Following on from the recent successes of Mallow golfer James Sugrue, Banteer man Paul Buckley has become the latest north Cork man to make his mark on the international golfing scene.
This after Buckley became the latest Irishman to triumph in the UAE, with a one-stroke victory in the Omega Emirates Men s Amateur Open at the Emirates Golf Club - the same venue at which Rory McIlroy won his first professional title back in 2009.
Having worked with renowned putting coach James Janowski prior to the tour, Buckley put the experience to good use, with just 28 putts in his opening three-under par round of 69, before finishing out the tournament with a closing 73 and a final total of -2. ....
