Former Boston police sergeant and a current officer agree to plead guilty in connection with overtime fraud scheme at evidence warehouse

A former Boston police sergeant and a Boston police officer have agreed to plead guilty in connection with ongoing investigation of overtime fraud at the Boston Police Department’s evidence warehouse, federal prosecutors announced on Thursday.
George Finch, the 59-year-old former sergeant, and Officer Michael Murphy, 61, were charged with one count of conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds and one count of embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds.
In September, Murphy, Finch and seven other Boston Police officers were arrested and charged for their roles in an overtime fraud scheme that prosecutors say has collectively embezzled more than $250,000 between May 2016 and February 2019.

A former Boston police officer pleaded guilty Tuesday to collecting more than $20,000 in bogus overtime payments, prosecutors said.
James Carnes, who has retired from the police force, pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds and embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds.
An email seeking comment was sent to Carnes lawyer.
Carnes, 57, of Canton, was one of nine people arrested in September in the fraud scheme at the police department s evidence warehouse. Authorities say those officers collected a total of more than $200,000 in overtime pay they were not entitled to.
Carnes admitted to routinely leaving overtime shifts early and submitting fraudulent overtime slips, prosecutors said.
