Pensacola News Journal Escambia County is considering creating its own broadband network for residents and businesses, propelled into action by slow connection speeds hindering work and school in the county’s more rural areas during the pandemic. Internet connections are often either spotty and too expensive or, in some areas in the north end, nonexistent. A study the county commissioned recently, completed by Magellan Advisors for about $180,000, found that about 50% of the county s land area the sparsely populated north end doesn’t have any connections that would meet the definition of broadband. The study found many connections in the more populated southern end also are lacking. ....
Pensacola News Journal Milton Mayor Heather Lindsay did not attend Monday night s executive committee meeting of the City Council after she claimed several council members neglected to follow CDC guidelines at the city s Mardi Gras parade and after party Saturday. Along with Lindsay, council members Sharon Holley, David Richardson and Matthew Jarrett were also absent from the meeting Monday evening. Jarrett attended the meeting virtually, but he could not vote on any issues discussed. Since five of the eight council members were present in-person at least five council members are needed for quorum the council was able to have its meeting. ....
The petition, which is being signed in-person during the pandemic, so far has a few hundred signatures, and organizers said they hope to get a thousand. Larry Hetu, a Gulf Breeze resident, is helping to get the petition around and said the cause could have important long-term implications for Santa Rosa County. “We think this can establish ourselves as being the destination for conservative persons and patriots,” Hetu said. Newly installed Commissioner James Calkins so far is the only board member to enthusiastically support the renaming, calling it a “great idea.” “There are lots of things named around the country after presidents, and this area, Santa Rosa County, voted for Donald Trump very strongly,” Calkins told the News Journal on Monday. “I think it’s a fantastic idea and it would be good for our county. After this was brought up, I talked to multiple business owners, multiple people, and I’m getting enthusiastic support for it.” ....
