Happy Valentine’s Day! A two-pronged winter storm is going to affect Alabama over the next 48 hours. There is high confidence that there will be impacts, but low confidence in the exact amounts of ice and sleet and snow. Let’s dig into the details.
THE CAUSE: A strengthening trough of low pressure is building over the western United States. An anchoring high is off the southeastern coast of the U.S. In between, a deep, moist southwesterly flow extends over the southern United States. Disturbances will pass through the trough over the next 48 hours, producing two waves of precipitation that will affect Alabama. The first wave will arrive Sunday night into Monday morning. The second will follow quickly on the heels of the first, arriving late Monday morning through late Monday night. A shallow Arctic airmass has edged into the Southeast. The stationary front lies over North Florida with freezing temperatures down into No ....

A big winter storm is in store for much of the Northeast Corridor over the next two weeks as the system currently impacting Alabama wraps up into a strong nor’easter. The system will bring the heaviest snows of the season to the Megapolis between Washington, D. C., and Boston. Here in Alabama, it’s a turn to colder starting later today.
ON THE WEATHER MAPS: This morning, we find a ridge over the western United States, with a broad ridge over the eastern half of the country. The western ridge will amplify strongly over the next couple of days, and the trough over the eastern U.S. will deepen. At the surface, low pressure is near Vincennes, Indiana, along the Indiana/Illinois border. This low is tracking eastward and weakening. A new surface low will develop along the North Carolina coast. This low will deepen rapidly as it tracks up the East Coast, becoming a powerful nor’easter. By Tuesday, an extremely deep trough wi ....

Sunday Weather Xtreme: Rain Returns This Afternoon, Rain and Thunder Monday Afternoon and Night : The Alabama Weather Blog

On this date in 1940, Birmingham lay under a blanket of knee-deep snow after 9.5 inches fell on the city on the 23rd. The Age-Herald proclaimed “Snow Nears All-Time High” as the total came just short of the all-time record of eleven inches for the city. The city was paralyzed and traffic was at a standstill as roads were dangerous and travel without chains was impossible. Schools were closed that day, which was a Wednesday, giving kids the opportunity to frolic in local parks. They would remain closed until the following Monday.
ALABAMA SATURDAY: Yesterday was a nice day across Central Alabama. There was a good supply of sun, especially during the morning, with some high clouds by afternoon. But not enough to dull the sun too much. High temperatures across the middle of the state included 60F in Birmingham, 62F at Anniston, and 63F at Tuscaloosa. The average high at Birmingham for this date is 54F, the normal low is 34F ....

?A parade of upper lows in a highly amplified pattern will be the interesting thing to watch over the next week in the Alabama Weather Department, but fairly quiet weather will prevail through midweek before some showers return on Thursday. Let’s see what’s going on…
A LOOK BACK AT SATURDAY: It was a day of variable cloudiness across North and Central Alabama yesterday. Clouds hung tough over the Southeast behind Friday’s front, which was still producing shower and storms across Florida and Georgia. Low clouds that had Mississippi completely socked in all day were encroaching on western Alabama as the upper low responsible for them was rotating to the north of our state. Meanwhile, some mid-level clouds moved across the middle of the state around noon in the southwesterly flow aloft that was still occurring across Alabama. Temperatures were in the 50s North and West with 60s Southeast. Overnight lows were in the 30s ....

Sunday Weather Xtreme: A Few Showers Today; Some Interesting Weather For Christmas : The Alabama Weather Blog

Bill Murray |
December 20, 2020 @ 6:30 am
The two components of our Sunday weather maker are sort of splitting to our north and south today, leaving much of Central Alabama dry. North Alabama got some light rain overnight, and South Alabama did as well, but the central part of the state was left mainly high and dry. There are a few showers out there this morning, but today may end up mostly dry. Highs this afternoon will top out in the lower 50s over North Alabama, with middle 50s across Central Alabama, and upper 50s to the south. There will be some clearing toward sunset, with partly cloudy skies overnight and lows in the 30s. ....
