Cotton import bill hits $1.84bn in 9MFY21 - Newspaper

KARACHI: The country spent $1.838 billion on cotton imports during nine months of the current fiscal year (9MFY21) up 46 per cent from $1.258bn in the same period a year ago.
The 9MFY21 lint imports surpassed the FY20 total cotton import bill of $1.704bn. Cotton import bill in FY19 was $1.65bn.
Meanwhile, sharp decline in cotton production from over 14 million bales in 2012 to 5.6m bales this year has shattered the hopes of the textile industry which was seeking to improve its performance. ....

Ginners oppose cotton imports from India - Newspaper


KARACHI: The Pakistan Cotton Ginn­ers Association (PCGA) on Saturday strongly opposed cotton imports from India, maintaining that the move would discourage local growers from sowing this cash crop.
Growers, ginners, spinners and cotton brokers are actively supporting the government’s decision of not allowing cotton imports from India despite the Economic Coordination Committee approval.
Talking to Dawn, PCGA Chairman Dr Jesu Mal said that if Indian cotton imports are allowed, growers will not go for sowing of cotton for this season. Cotton sowing has already begun in Sindh and will start soon in Punjab.
“Due to no research on cotton seeds, poor pesticides and high cost of fertilisers, cotton yield fell to nine maund per acre during the season ended with just 5.5 million bales almost one third of the production we achieved with 14.8m bales a few years ago,” he said. ....

WAHGA: Another group of Pakistani Hindu families that had migrated to India, to seek better living conditions and economic future, returned here Thursday, fully disappointed, but happy to return home.
Over 100 Hindus have returned to Pakistan in the past few months, who were lured to migrate to India, with promises of starting a new life and economic prosperity. However, after a real-life experience of what they said was the “horrific living conditions”, the Hindu families opted to return home. “We were far better placed here in Pakistan and had much greater financial status,” said Jesu Mal son of Radho Kachhi who was utterly dismayed by the treatment meted out to them. ....
