A Colorado Startup Will Certify Some Natural Gas As "Responsibly Sourced." Will That Actually Help With Climate Change?

For anyone concerned about the environment, labels can be a quick way to ease a guilty conscience. A “certified organic” logo promises food untouched by synthetic pesticides. A “fair trade” label is meant to ensure the workers behind a product have good wages and working conditions.
Chris Romer, the president and co-founder of Project Canary, is now applying the same strategy to fossil fuels. His company monitors emissions from natural gas operations and certifies the final product as “responsibly sourced.”
“Just because it’s fossil fuel doesn’t mean it’s all the same carbon footprint,” Romer said. “That’s what we’re evangelizing on.” ....

Xcel looks to gas suppliers with lower methane emissions in Colorado

Dive Brief:
The utility will pay a premium to Crestone Peak Resources, which minimizes methane leakage in the production and transport of natural gas by continuously monitoring activity through Project Canary’s technology. The results, which will be tracked starting this spring through early 2022, will be third-party certified by the Payne Institute at the Colorado School of Mines.
Some clean energy advocates say the industry should already be continuously monitoring for methane leaks. The natural gas industry is doing everything in their power to delay a phase down in gas plant buildouts due to climate action, said Bruce Niles, executive director of climate imperative at Energy Innovation, calling responsibly sourced gas  the new clean coal. ....
