Christchurch council-backed airport plan sparks concern among city's elected reps

A proposed airport in Central Otago was the target of an Extinction Rebellion protest at the Christchurch City Council. (Video first published in December 2020)
Johanson said he had a number of concerns about the new airport, although other councillors have backed away from his amendment.
The vote will take place on May 13 and requires support from a majority of councillors to pass.
The vote was pushed back on Thursday because staff from holding company Christchurch City Holdings Ltd (CCHL) were not available to answer questions.

Tenants fearful of ongoing violence, threats at social housing complexes

A resident of an ŌCHT unit on Conference St, who did not want to be named because of fear of reprisal, said he and other residents were so scared they were trying to move elsewhere.
The man, who had lived at Conference St for seven years, alleged behaviour in the complex had deteriorated over the past year as non-residents started sleeping in corridors at the invitation of a few residents.
He said one elderly woman was so frightened she would only leave her room when her sons picked her up to go shopping.
He wanted the trust to vet prospective tenants and move on anyone exhibiting anti-social behaviour. ....

Christchurch Foundation boss describes critical report as 'ridiculous'

He said the Deloitte report had ended up being another audit, branding it “just ridiculous”.
Rolleston wanted to know how much the council had spent on the report, with staff saying $35,000 had been budgeted but not all was spent.
“Christchurch Foundation is owned by the people of Canterbury. They are who I look to, to do reporting,” Rolleston said.
The report found that for each donated dollar, the foundation incurred 56 cents of costs, considerably higher than Auckland Foundation at 23 cents and Momentum Waikato at 41 cents.
But Carter told the council that when calculating that figure, Deloitte had taken out the $11.4 million it had received in donations related to the 2019 mosque attacks, but kept in the costs it incurred in collecting and distributing that money. ....
