GARRETT â After taking 2020 off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Garrettâs Heritage Days Festival returns this weekend. Events will take place in the downtown area or in Eastside Park on East Houston Street, across from Garrett High School. A parade opens festivities at 6 p.m. Saturday. Night to Remember will provide live music from 7:30-10:30 p.m. on the outdoor stage in Eastside Park. Several events are on the schedule for Sunday. The Garrett Rotary Club will serve a pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. The 14th annual cruise-in car show, sponsored by Rollin Heritage, runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Car show awards will be announced at 2 p.m. ....
GARRETT â Kaden Fordeckâs hopes to win the DeKalb County Spelling Bee were briefly dashed when he omitted a vowel in âimpenetrableâ in the fourth round, leaving fifth-grader Chloe Hunt from McKenney-Harrison Elementary the only contestant still standing. However, Hunt misspelled âinauguralâ in the championship round, giving Fordeck, a DeKalb Middle School sixth-grader, a second chance. He rejoined Hunt, seventh-grader Reagan Ioor from Eastside Junior-Senior High School and Audrey Mullins, a sixth-grade student from Garrett Middle School at center stage for three more rounds in the Garrett High School Performing Arts Center before correctly spelling âpunctualityâ to become the county champion. Ioor was runner-up, having incorrectly spelled âscrawnyâ in the eighth round. ....
GARRETT â The deafening sound of 18 third-graders pounding nails into wooden blocks filled Kim Harrisâ third grade classroom at J.E. Ober Elementary School Thursday afternoon. The students were participating in a live, virtual training session led by DIY Networkâs Kayleen McCabe. The collaboration was made possible through a relationship between the school, CEFGA (Construction Education Foundation of Georgia) Little Builders and Home Depot. During the 45-minute session, students constructed a scaled-down tool bench from pre-cut kits that included wood and nails, topped off with a decal depicting tools hanging on the bench. Each participant was provided safety glasses and a wooden-handled claw hammer before the building began. McCabe was broadcasting live from Colorado, with student intern Sophie joining in from Georgia. ....
