Californians will decide on Sept. 14 whether or not to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom, but Yolo County residents are encouraged to weigh in now on where voter-assistance centers and ballot drop boxes being used for the election should be located.
As with the November 2020 presidential election, the September gubernatorial recall election will rely on mail-in voting, with every active registered voter receiving a ballot in mid-August.
In addition to returning ballots via the postal service, county residents will also have access to 13 voter-assistance centers and 13 ballot drop boxes throughout the county. The elections office will be accepting public comment through Friday on where those voter-assistance centers and ballot drop boxes should be located. Yolo County supervisors approved an ordinance last week assisting property owners who have relocated here after the loss of their homes due to recent wildfires and floods elsewhere in California.
The ordinance allows those individuals who qualify to carry over their previous county’s property tax base to their replacement property in Yolo County.
In recent years, the state has seen an increase in residents impacted by natural disasters and victims have faced significant and sudden tax hikes when relocating across county lines, sometimes just a few miles from their damaged homes.
This ordinance allows for those individuals who lost their home prior to the timeline set by Proposition 19 to potentially qualify for tax relief. It has been just over two weeks since we certified the general election in Yolo County, a function of my role as the registrar of voters. In my other role as the county assessor, I find it my responsibility to inform Yolo County residents of one Proposition on the ballot that was passed by California voters that will greatly impact property tax assessments for certain taxpayers Proposition 19.
Proposition 19, billed as “The Property Tax Transfers, Exemptions, and Revenue for Wildfire Agencies and Counties Amendment,” passed with 51.1% of California voter approval in November. As a result, 2021 will see significant changes in property taxes assessed on certain personal residences. Typically, a property’s assessed amount is set when the owner acquires the property, and can only increase by up to 2% a year, until the property is sold and reassessed at the market value. ....
