(submitted photo) Fifteen teachers and staff were recognized at North Mahaska on Thursday, May 27. Honorees included on retiree, Judy Caves. Also honored were those staff members who had reached employment milestones. Caves is retiring from the elementary school after 14 years in the district. She most recently taught third grade. Four others were honored as they have or are leaving the district. Angie Smith, who worked in the high school office for 26 years, left after last year but was honored this year. Mike Huffman, who coached in the district is leaving after 21 years. He coached junior varsity and assistant high school basketball. ....

The limited series, Let’s Talk: Mental Health, aims to break down the stigma around mental health, and get people talking about the conditions they might be living with. The original series, which launches today across all of It’s Gone Viral’s social platforms, coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week. New four-minute bitesize episodes will be published on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube daily until Sunday 16th, with longer versions available on YouTube. ....
Mary Foy, City of Durham MP, has written to the Home Secretary Priti Patel to express her opposition to a women’s immigration detention centre that is to be built at the Hassockfield site in Medomsley, County Durham. This action comes after an open letter, written by three Durham students, urged Mary Foy to appeal to the Home Secretary, asking her to refrain from proceeding with the building of the detention centre. It was subsequently signed by over 1500 County Durham residents. Speaking about the proposed detention centre, Mary Foy said: “I am disgusted by the Government’s plans to open an immigration detention centre in Medomsley whilst completely ignoring local concerns in order to push its cruel immigration system on a small community hundreds of miles away from where the decision is made. ....
