Farmers Union National Convention Speakers Say Market Consolidation Costs Farmers, Ranchers and Consumers


 
HURON, S.D. – Impacts of market consolidation on farmers and ranchers was the focus of Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar’s February 26 presentation to producers during the 2021 National Farmers Union Virtual Convention.
“Farmers are paying a lot more, but not getting a lot more,” Klobuchar said. She shared that this is largely due to market consolidation – noting just two companies sell 80 percent of all corn seed. And the Chairwoman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust, and Consumer Rights, pointed out increased input costs do not translate to increased profits.
“When it comes to selling crops and livestock, farmers and ranchers have ever fewer options as they struggle to get a fair price,” Klobuchar said. ....

Breaking tradition, 93rd SD FFA Convention moved to Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. COVID restrictions have forced changes to South Dakota’s Future Farmers of America Foundation. Last year was a virtual convention, but this year, it means a break from tradition, and a change in location to Rapid City.
The FFA convention is being move from the Brookings campus of South Dakota State University, and will be held at both the Central States Fairgrounds and Western Dakota Tech. It’s the first time the event will not be held at SDSU, but the move to Rapid City is considered a better option than holding another virtual convention. ....

2021 Policy Established During S.D. Farmers Union 2020 State Convention


HURON — Nearly 100 South Dakota family farmers and ranchers gathered virtually for the 2020 South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) Annual Convention Dec. 9.
“Grassroots policy development is no less strong in a virtual environment,” said Doug Sombke, SDFU President and a fourth-generation Conde farmer. “I’m sure like everyone, I missed the 3-D experience. But even though we were unable to meet in person due to the pandemic, member engagement was strong, as our members discussed and voted on policy and special orders to address timely challenges facing our state’s family farmers and ranchers.”
Aberdeen farmer, Kirk Schaunaman agreed. “All things considered, for a virtual convention, I thought it was outstanding. It was really good. Great speakers, and technology-wise, it went smooth,” he said. ....
