NJ nonprofits left hanging by law delaying unemployment tax hikes
TRENTON – A law enacted in January that reduces or delays increases in what employers pay for unemployment taxes that would have spiked during the COVID-19 emergency doesn’t cover some nonprofits, which hope a follow-up bill rescuing them will be passed in June.
Some nonprofits pay their unemployment insurance bills to the state through reimbursements if their workers are laid off or furloughed, instead of payroll taxes like other businesses. A January law delaying big hikes in unemployment taxes has been interpreted in a way that keeps self-insured nonprofits on the hook for their bills. ....

How has remote work gone during pandemic? NJ may do a study

How has remote work gone during pandemic? NJ may do a study
TRENTON Nearly a year into New Jersey’s forced experiment with widespread remote work from home, the Legislature is considering a study into how it has gone.
The Senate Labor Committee endorsed a bill creating an 11-member Remote Work Study Commission. It would be tasked with evaluating whether the advantages of remote work exceed its disadvantages, whether remote work has positive effects on the productivity of workers and the effect that the coronavirus 2019 pandemic has had on remote work.
Michael Egenton, executive vice president of government relations for the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the proposed study. The chamber would have a spot on the panel. ....

In a reprise of a debate from three years ago over lucrative subsidies to keep New Jersey’s three nuclear power plants from closing, backers and critics squared off over whether to keep charging ratepayers for the $300 million annual payments.
In two virtual public hearings Monday, the two sides once again portrayed the financial viability of the PSEG Nuclear units in starkly contrasting terms. PSEG executives argued the plants are in worse fiscal shape than they were in 2018 when a divided Board of Public Utilities voted to award the initial subsidies to avert their closing. ....

PLAINSBORO, NJ (February 2, 2021)   A newly formed coalition of New Jersey business groups committed to bipartisan immigration reform has weighed in on aspects of the Biden administration’s immigration reform legislative package.
