Steven Spielberg has always wanted to make a musical, and now he has, with
West Side Story. Based on the Broadway musical that first launched in 1957, and was then turned into a film in 1961,
West Side Story is the tale of star-crossed lovers in 1957 New York. Unlike the 1961 film, Spielberg only wanted actors with Hispanic backgrounds to play Hispanic characters, and he’s assembled a cast of familiar faces and new names. He’s also brought back
Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for her role in the 1961 film, and here plays a new character. Watch the

Those watching the 2021 Oscars on Sunday were treated to the first trailer for the new West Side Story.
The upcoming film, an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name which is loosely based on Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, is directed by Steven Spielberg. It stars Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort and Rita Moreno, among others.

This version of West Side Story comes 60 years after the iconic 1961 film adaptation directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer. It won 10 Academy Awards, including best picture and best supporting actress for Moreno.

Spielberg directed from a script by his
Lincoln and
West Side Story, which draws inspiration from
Romeo and Juliet, originated as a 1957 Broadway musical written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. It tells the story of star-crossed lovers torn between two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.
The 20th Century film wrapped in October 2019 and has been awaiting release after being delayed a year by COVID-19. It is now due out Dec. 10.
