However, Professor Leary said she was concerned that these lessons were being forgotten.
“I think organisations are quite desperate and certainly in nursing workforce planning we see the ‘someone is better than no one’ as a common approach,” she said.
“I think serious consideration needs to be given to how a lack of expert nursing care affects patient safety,” she told
Nursing Times.
“There is evidence and there are many inquires, including the Francis report, that cite this, but these lessons don’t seem to be considered.”

Giving of IV drugs by nursing associates comes under spotlight


NHS Employers, which is part of the NHS Confederation, described the webinar on Wednesday as a “knowledge sharing session between employers and HR professionals”.
It said attendees would “hear employers share their successes of using the role and celebrate how nursing associates have contributed to the NHS workforce supply”.
“Their approach to implementing drug and IV administration supports the scale up of the role within the NHS workforce,” it added.
During the webinar attendees took part in a poll, which found that almost all (97%) had nursing associates in their workplace.
“If I’m being honest, our nursing associates do see this as a route to becoming a registered nurse” ....

We have two types of educational standards: “standards of proficiency” which describe what people need to know and be able to do to gain an NMC qualification, and “standards of education and training”, which describe the standards education providers must meet, if they wish to run a programme which leads to a regulated qualification.
