Infrastructure major issue as Chad Mims, Geraldine Brinkley compete for Tupelo Ward 1 seat

EDITOR S NOTE: This story is the first in a series highlighting the candidates running for Tupelo City Council. Additional entries will run throughout the week.  TUPELO • Both candidates vying to fill the Ward 1 City Council seat are highlighting infrastructure policy as a major campaign theme, although they disagree in key ways. Republican candidate Chad Mims is focusing on quality-of-life issues and recreational opportunities, including his desire to improve the publicly-owned Bel Air Golf Course. Democrat Geraldine Brinkley is foregrounding road infrastructure and safety, claiming that the Walsh Road area of Ward 1 has fallen behind and needs upgrades. Both candidates describe the city of Tupelo as a thriving community in need of a City Council representative willing to foster continued improvement and growth.

Chad Mims wins Republican nomination in Ward 1 runoff election

TUPELO • Chad Mims on Tuesday night won the Republican nomination in the Ward 1 runoff election, bringing an end to a hotly contested GOP primary. Mims, a 43-year-old pharmaceutical sales representative, defeated Amanda Angle, an accountant. Uncertified but complete election day results gathered from local polling precincts and absentee ballots show that Mims received 51.1% of the votes to 48.9% for Angle. Mims campaigned on looking at potential ideas to improve public safety in neighborhoods, working to improve the golf course at the Bel Air Center and exploring quality of life projects in the ward. “You also want to make it where it’s a safe area to live and exercise,” Mims said in a previous interview with the Daily Journal. “It helps the property values in the area as well as makes it safer. People that are moving into Tupelo especially are looking for somewhere to move to, that’s one of the big areas that they look at.”

TUPELO • City Council incumbents in Ward 6 and Ward 7 were ousted in primary runoffs Tuesday, while Chad Mims narrowly won the Republican primary for an open seat in Ward 1. Victories by women in Ward 6 and Ward 7 ensure that at least three members of the Tupelo City Council over the next four years will be women, a historic share of representation for female officeholders. Mims defeated Amanda Angle, receiving 51.1% of the votes to 48.9% for Angle. Angle performed better than her primary day totals to make the runoff race close. In Ward 6, Janet Gaston defeated fourth-term incumbent Mike Bryan on Tuesday night to win the Republican nomination, capturing a resounding 60% of the vote, with Bryan earning just over 39% of the vote.

Tupelo voters can participate in municipal runoff elections today

TUPELO • Some voters in the All America City will cast ballots on Tuesday to decide who should represent them in City Hall over the next four years. Voters in three of the city’s wards — Ward 1, 6 and 7 — have an opportunity to participate in runoff elections to decide who should sit on the Tupelo City Council over the next four years. Two of the races, however, will not be completely settled on Tuesday night. In Ward 1, for example, Amanda Angle and Chad Mims are competing for the Republican nomination. The winner will face Geraldine Brinkley, the Democratic nominee, in the general election on June 8.
