Date Time Azarias report highlights need for action on agriculture sector abuse A report from John Azarias’s National Agricultural Workforce Strategy has once again revealed the cesspool of worker abuse in Australian agriculture, and highlights the urgent need for a Royal Commission, according to the Retail Supply Chain Alliance. The report, released last week, notes that “dependence on an overseas seasonal and transient workforce is one of the biggest issues faced by a number of developed countries”, and that “using low-cost labour is not a long-term solution, and indeed can be a highly risky option”. The RSCA is a partnership between the Australian Workers’ Union, Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association and the Transport Workers’ Union. ....
Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association National Secretary Gerard Dwyer says a royal commission should be called over questions of pay and conditions in the horticulture industry.
“We’ve had a numerous number of inquiries into this sector in the past decade and all that finishes up happening is we get an inquiry, we get a report, and nothing changes,” he told Sky News host Alan Jones.
Mr Dwyer said other parts of the horticulture industry pay their workers fairly and there is enough money to pay workers correctly.
“We want a virtuous supply chain where workers are getting paid properly, the farmers are getting a fair deal, the truck drivers are getting a fair deal.” ....
February 1, 2021 Fast-food and retail workers will receive a pay rise from today, after the Fair Work Commission announced a 1.75% increase in award wages. The increase in minimum wages was set to take place in July last year, however, the Fair Work Commission delayed the rise due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on some industries, including retail and hospitality. The retail and fast-food award wage is now $21.78 an hour. The Fair Work Commission’s decision to freeze the 1.75% increase for retail and hospitality workers was met with backlash from both the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association and the Australian Council of Trade Unions, which argued that women and young people make up the majority of the workforce and would be disproportionately affected by the pandemic. ....
