Pawtucket commission grants 6-month extension for Apex redevelopment plans THE PAWTUCKET CITY PLANNING COMMISSION on Tuesday approved a six-month extension to master plans to redevelop the Apex site in downtown Pawtucket. / PBN PFILE HOTO/PAMELA BHATIA PAWTUCKET – Amid a legal battle over development rights, the Pawtucket City Planning Commission has agreed to extend existing approvals on the project proposed for the iconic Apex property in downtown. The commission’s 3-1 vote on Tuesday gives Apex Development Co. another six months to make progress on its plans for a mixed-use development for the 12-acre, five parcel swath along I-195 in Pawtucket. The master plan for Riverfront Commons first approved in 2015 calls for “thousands of acres” of  retail, office and restaurants, anchored by the Apex Department Store. The approval was set to expire on July 1.

PAWTUCKET – The City Planning Commission last month approved preliminary plans from JK Equities for a large-scale distribution center called Blackstone Distribution Center to replace the former Microfibres at 1 Moshassuck St. Assistant Director of Planning Jay Rosa said the May 18 vote was for conditional approval, subject to additional permitting approval by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and utilities National Grid, Narragansett Bay Commission, and the Pawtucket Water Supply Board. This will not be a rehab of the existing mill structure but a total demolition of the vacant industrial structure and new construction of a 159,562-square-foot distribution facility with 128 parking spaces and 36 loading spaces, according to the written decision on the plan.

One self-storage facility is proposed at 602 Mineral Spring Ave., and officials have confirmed that another one is planned for a former medical building previously owned by Memorial Hospital at 555 Prospect St. On April 20 at 6 p.m., the City Planning Commission will hold a remote public hearing on Zoom to review a proposed development project at 602-650 Mineral Spring Ave., with applicant SAFStor Real Estate Co. proposing to build a self-storage facility with designated loading and 12 surface parking spaces.
