FREEPORT State Rep. Brad Drake has introduced an amendment to a local bill that removes the prospect of wiping out a city ordinance pertaining to the distance from a school that alcohol can be sold.
The amendment changes just a few words, but removes a key phrase that would have allowed businesses within a specialty center encompassing a town square at Jay Odom s Hammock Bay development to sell alcohol within 500 feet of a planned Freeport middle school. ....

Jay Odom's push to change Freeport alcohol ordinance gets key tweak

Drake, R-Eucheeanna, introduced the amendment Thursday, the day the bill was scheduled to have been considered before the entire state House. It is now slated to be heard Tuesday.
State Sen. George Gainer, R-Panama City, said he suggested changing the bill language after speaking to Drake and Freeport Mayor Russ Barley.
In a Friday email, Barley said he had spoken to Gainer but did not indicate that he taken a firm stance either for or against making changes to the existing city ordinance, which was passed in 1980.
The City Council has not discussed the issue at hand and I did speak with Sen. Gainer and stated to him that I would be back in touch after receiving additional information concerning the matter, Barley said. Mr. Odom as of this date has not been in to discuss the situation with me. ....

FORT WALTON BEACH State Rep. Ray Sansom and state Sen. Don Gaetz were seated at the end of a long conference table, meeting as they often did with the Northwest Florida Daily News editorial board, when Sansom received the call notifying him that he had been designated to serve as Speaker of the House during the 2009-10 legislative sessions.
It was hard to tell, on that day in 2005, which of the two men was happier when Sansom shared the news.
Gaetz and Sansom were friends and political allies before either attained state office.
