WORCESTER   A youth summer jobs program aimed at beautifying the city while fostering environmental stewardship and economic and educational pathways  will put 25 young people to work this summer.
The Worcester Green Corps will hit city streets and parks this summer as a collaborative effort between the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Central Massachusetts.
While this enormous economic development momentum is taking place, there has been a nagging and persistent issue with trash, litter and debris, Tim Murray, CEO and president of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, said during a Monday morning press conference at City Hall announcing the initiative. ....

Worcester council considers permanent COVID-19 memorial


WORCESTER According to the city, 421 residents have died from COVID-19.
More than 23,000 residents caught the virus. Around 43% of the city s population has received at least one shot of the vaccine. Weekly virus counts have stabilized in recent weeks after a surge to begin the new year, and appear to be dropping off in line with statewide tallies.
Just a few weeks ago, it seemed like residents in Worcester and across the state were growing frustrated seeing other states expanding their vaccination eligibility to more and more of the population.
In March, internet-savvy residents banded together to find appointments for teachers being called back into the classroom. Massive logjams of people desperate for a shot shut down online registration systems in February. ....

For more than 50 years, Dianne Protano has kept an eye over a monument in memory of her brother Guy, who died in Vietnam, through her kitchen window on Solferino Street.
But, on Jan. 11, she watched in horror as the monument was knocked over by a large truck.  ....

Crompton Park skate park plans moving forward in Worcester


WORCESTER Plans for a skateboard park at Crompton Park have been approved by the Parks and Recreation Commission and are ready to move forward. 
The Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved the master plan for the skate park in December. In a communication to the City Council ahead of Tuesday s meeting, City Manager Edward M. Augustus noted there is $2 million in capital funds for the project in the Fiscal 2021 budget.
The Master Plan has been designed to meet the needs, wants, and desires of the neighbors, city residents, and skatepark community, Augustus said in the communication. 
The parks commission s approval paves the way for final design and for construction to begin in earnest. Officials from Weston & Sampson, the engineering and design firm that worked with the city on the master planning process, told the parks commission last month the project will go out to bid over the winter, and construction should start this summer.
