The clamour for those first restorative hair cuts was something akin to the Harry Potter books first coming out. But now the industry is facing its own crisis as the number of hairdressing apprenticeships has plummeted. The National Hair and Beauty Federation estimates the number of people starting hairdressing and barbering apprenticeships has dropped from 15,450 in 2016/17 to around 7,000 in 2019/20. Hairdressers fear the lack of information for school leavers is having an impact on the number of people coming into the industry. ....

(File photo) Parking on footpaths could soon become an offence in Wellington, following public complaints about increased risks to pedestrians and a lack of space for emergency vehicles. The change is being proposed as part of Wellington City Council’s new parking policy, introduced in August, which aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles, manage increasing parking demands and make it easier to travel around the city. The proposed new law would instigate a city-wide ban on parking on, or partially on, footpaths across the city, with infringement notices to be issued at the discretion of parking wardens. ....
Thousands of people were on the streets of Dalton-in-Furness despite the rain for the town’s annual carnival in 1997. A light drizzle began to fall shortly before the start of the parade, although it did not dampen the spirits of the brightly-coloured dancers trooping through the streets. That year’s carnival queen, Abigail Groves, 15, was accompanied by ladies-in-waiting Hannah Hall and Stacey Birkett, both 14. The parade started on Prince Street and wound its way through the town, which was lined with crowds clutching umbrellas, and ended up at the Dalton Football Club field.
