Last August, solar developers entered an auction to sell power into the Portuguese electricity grid. And many planned to lose money on every megawatt. One of the winning bidders, Spanish solar firm Enerland, offered to sell electricity for €11.14 (US$13.12) per megawatt-hour (MWh), one of the lowest auctioned electricity prices in history. In the wilderness of the Gobi Desert sit two factories that churn out vast quantities of polysilicon, the raw material in billions of solar panels all over the world. In the wilderness of the Gobi Desert sit two factories that churn out vast quantities of polysilicon, the raw material in billions of solar panels all over the world. Almost no one outside China knows what goes on inside these factories, or two others elsewhere in Xinjiang that together produce nearly half the world’s polysilicon supply. State secrecy cloaks the raw material for a green boom that researchers at BloombergNEF project will include a nearly tenfold increase in solar capacity over the next three decades. Having jostled for the title for some time, the International Energy Agency made headlines late last year when it crowned solar PV as the new “king of electricity markets” worldwide, ahead of wind, hydropower and all other generation technologies. Citing drastic reductions in price over the last decade in particular, the IEA – which is reasonably famed for having underestimated solar PV’s potential in the past – projected that solar would smash deployment records in each year from 2022 onwards, becoming the preeminent source of power in Europe by 2025.
That projection came within the IEA’s World Energy Outlook report for 2020, wherein all of the association’s models projected that renewables would grow rapidly over the coming decade.
